Southwest Tennessee Community College Economic Impact

In the context of higher education, Southwest partnered with Lightcast to conduct an Economic Impact Study (EIS). This study analyzes Southwest's significance and value to the regional economy, as well as the return on investment (ROI) it provides to students, faculty, staff, taxpayers, and society as a whole.

In essence, the report answers the question: "What would our community look like if Southwest didn’t exist?"

Southwest's total economic impact on the Mid-South region in FY 2022-23 was significant, amounting to $507.3 million in added income to the local economy. This contribution is equivalent to supporting 6,272 jobs across various industries in the region.

Expanded Impact:

  1. Job Creation: The 6,272 jobs supported by Southwest span direct employment (faculty, staff, and campus operations) and indirect roles generated through local spending by the institution, its employees, students, and alumni.
  2. Income Contribution: The $507.3 million in added income reflects the combined impact of operations, student and alumni spending, and the enhanced earning power of graduates. This includes ripple effects across sectors such as retail, healthcare, housing, and professional services.
  3. Regional Significance: Southwest’s economic activity highlights its role as a key driver of economic growth and stability in the Mid-South, fostering opportunities and improving quality of life for residents.

This economic contribution underscores Southwest’s critical importance not only as an educational institution but also as a cornerstone of the regional economy.
