Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) or Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) provides Southwest students an opportunity to earn college credit through evaluation and assessment of an individual's job trainings, certification, or advanced standing toward further education or training.
You can obtain credit for prior learning through several methods used at Southwest to assess college-level learning gained outside of the institution to award college credit towards a degree or certificate program.
- Standardized Exams
- DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST)
- College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
- Challenge Exams
- Military Experience
- Industry Training/Workforce
- Portfolio–Based Assessment

Eligibility:
To apply and receive credit for prior learning, you must be:
- An active Southwest certificate or degree-seeking student
- In good academic standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0
- In good financial standing with the College and do not have any outstanding debts
