Southwest Softball Team To Face Cleveland State in Region Play-In Game

The Southwest Tennessee Community College softball team will travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee, this week for the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII Tournament hosted by Chattanooga State Community College.
The eighth-seed Lady Saluqis will take on ninth-seed Cleveland State in a play-in game on April 29 at 2 p.m. The winner advances to the eight-team double-elimination tournament which begins on April 30 with the championship game set for May 2. The tournament champion advances to the NJCAA National Tournament May 13-16 in St. George, Utah.
Southwest is led by sophomore centerfielder Alex Turner, a first team All-TCCAA selection as a freshman last season, and her former Munford High School teammate, Tara Comer, a sophomore pitcher/third baseman. Turner is batting .380 and leads the team with 14 doubles and 49 runs scored. She recently broke the Southwest career home run record and now has 21 in her two seasons with the team. Comer is the team's top hitter with a .404 average, 13 doubles, 3 triples, 6 home runs and 43 runs batted in. She also leads the pitching staff with a 3.95 earned run average and 89 strikeouts.
Sophomore first baseman Dallas Chipman, a Bartlett High School product, has also had an outstanding year at the plate averaging .340 with team-highs of nine home runs and 45 runs batted in. Other top hitters include Marissa Davis, a sophomore rightfielder from Cherokee, Alabama, who is batting .331, and leads the team with 15 stolen bases; and Taylor Gilliland, a freshman shortstop from Naples, Florida, who is batting .303 with a team-high five triples. Joining Comer on the pitching staff is Hannah Wright, a freshman from Dyersburg, Tennessee, who leads the team with 12 wins.
