National Safety Council Honors Southwest Tennessee Community College

National Safety Council (NSC) honors Southwest Tennessee Community College Corporate Training and Continuing Education department with a Trendsetter Award for outstanding Defensive Driving training in 2016. During the National Safety Council's Congress and Exposition, NSC awarded Southwest Tennessee Community College Corporate Training and Continuing Education department of Memphis, Tennessee for their efforts to improve roadway safety.

The NSC pioneered the nation's first Defensive Driving Course in 1964 with the goal of reducing injuries and eliminating traffic fatalities across the nation. With over 6,000 certified NSC Defensive Driving instructors worldwide, NSC has trained nearly 75,000,000 drivers over these 50 plus years. With over 40,000 deaths and countless injuries on our roadways each year, educating the public with defensive driving techniques is vital to public safety.

Deborah A. P. Hersman, President and CEO of the National Safety Council, personally honored the best-of-the-best Training Centers and Instructors during this year's Driver Safety Awards Celebration. NSC salutes Southwest Tennessee Community College Corporate Training and Continuing Education department on their exceptional work in 2016.

"Southwest is committed to the safety of our community. The good habits young people learn will carry them far into adulthood. It's another commitment to demonstrate how much we value our youth," says Kathy Simpson, Continuing Education Manager. "One of Workforce Development, Economic Development and Continuing Education goals is to expand the Alive at 25 program to Shelby, Fayette counties and the surrounding Mid-South region high schools to make sure all of our young adults understand the rules of the road, make better choices, live longer and have a productive life."
