Bennett Double-Double leads Lady Saluqis in overtime victory over Holmes Community College

Takya Bennett scored a career-high 31 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Tamia Curry nearly had a quadruple-double to lead the Southwest women's basketball team to a 68-58 overtime victory over Holmes Community College last night at the Verties Sails Gymnasium. The win improved the Lady Saluqis to 5-1 on the season.

Bennett, a sophomore from Memphis, made 9 of 19 field goals and was 13 of 18 from the free throw line. Curry, a sophomore from Jackson, Tennessee, had 10 points, 11 rebounds, 9 blocked shots and 8 steals. The lone freshman starter, Tia Bland (Covington, TN) added 16 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. The Lady Saluqis overcame a poor shooting game (29.9 percent) by forcing 43 Holmes turnovers and limiting them to just 26 percent field goal shooting.

Saluqi Men upset nationally ranked Holmes with second half shooting

J'Sebian Brown scored a game-high 21 points and Yuryk Lazard came off the bench to post career-highs of 13 points and 8 rebounds to lead the Southwest men past Holmes Community College, ranked #13 in the nation, 79-77.

Brown, a sophomore from East Poinsett County (AR) High School, made 7 of 9 field goals including 5 of 7 from behind the arc. He also tied Lazard for the rebound leader with 8 boards. Also scoring in double figures were freshmen Cedric Henderson Jr. (Briarcrest Christian) with 17 points and Christian Jones (Rochester, NY) with 12 points.

Saluqi sharp shooting was on display with the team shooting 58 percent from the field for the game, including 67 percent from three-point range. In the second half, Southwest shot 59 percent (16 of 27) from the field, outscoring Holmes 48-43. The Southwest men are now 4-3 on the season.
