Facilitators attend continuing education training Jan. 11

The Department of Workforce Development and Continuing Education hosted a training for new and current continuing education facilitators Jan. 11 in preparation for spring semester courses. Corporate Training and Continuing Education Program Manager Kathy Simpson provided the instructors an overview of the College’s policies and procedures, course schedule, and an introduction on marketing their courses. Simpson encouraged the instructors to promote their courses like it was their own business. She said it is vital to spread the word through social media and by distributing flyers and networking.  “Students who sign up for continuing education typically pay for the course so they are highly motivated students,” Simpson said. “Word-of-mouth is a powerful way to advertise.”

This year’s facilitators offer a wide range of courses, from situational leadership to entrepreneurial thinking, in addition to traditional course offerings. Simpson is excited about the level of talent and expertise represented at the training. “We have stellar instructors who produce highly skilled, trained and knowledgeable students who are ready for hire.”

Robinson has taught at Southwest before and has over 25 years of experience in manufacturing, workforce, and business development in corporate America. She also has been an entrepreneur for the past 10 years. Robinson will teach Entrepreneurial Thinking, a course designed to enhance students’ interpersonal skills for building a career or business. “I teach basic foundational skills to get people from where they are today to where they want to be,” Robinson said.

Facilitator Tamara Brown is new to Southwest and new to teaching. She retired last year from the City of Memphis as a technology officer and has over 20 years of experience in technology. Brown is Principal of 93 Octane LLC, a project management consultancy on information technology, construction and facilities, education and curriculum, and transportation and fleet. In her course on project management, she plans to focus on helping students develop a new mindset toward the completion of projects from start to finish. <q>I decided to teach at Southwest because I want to partner with a local college where I can help empower and educate young people.
