Congratulations to Sherria King, dean of humanities, social sciences, and mathematics, who was selected as one of Memphis Business Journal’s (MBJ) top leader in higher education.
MBJ notes that this group of women who represent department chairs to deans and on to key C-suite executives and presidents, is educating the next generation, which could advance whole industries and subject areas.

Sherria King
Dean, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Mathematics, Southwest Tennessee Community College (STCC)
Isn’t it wonderful when you love your job? It certainly is for Sherria King, Ph.D., who thoroughly enjoys her work and looks forward to future opportunities to expand her reach, knowledge, and contributions to the higher education sector, which she’s served for 15 years; four of them at STCC.
Sherria provides leadership and oversight over the Division of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Mathematics, including all department chairs, faculty, and staff. It’s quite a lot considering the division has four academic departments: languages and literature, communication, graphic and fine arts, mathematics, and social and behavioral sciences.
She’s spotted two interesting industry trends: “the shift in focus on providing students with meaningful workforce credentials that can be earned quickly, and the increase in online learning.”
“My biggest career achievement has been having the opportunity to serve such a dynamic group of students, faculty, and staff in various leadership positions here at Southwest Tennessee Community College,” King said.
