Incoming freshmen preview college life at Saluqi Day
Incoming freshmen from area high schools arrived April 11 at Nabors Gymnasium with family and friends in tow to get a head start on planning their academic journey. It was Saluqi Day, an annual event that welcomes and thanks early enrollees for completing their forms in advance of the fall semester. The prospective students were treated to tours, food, favors and fun while academic advisors, financial aid and admissions staff, faculty and Southwest student ambassadors answered their questions.
Freshman and Mitchell High School graduate Maria Tyler arrived with her father Marion. They said they both chose Southwest because it was an affordable opportunity. “You can’t beat attending a college tuition-free,” said Tyler who is interested in the radiology program. “I’ll have less debt when I graduate.”
Decorian Richardson graduated from Pathways in Education High School. He’s not ready
to declare a major yet and wants to take some time to explore his academic options.
“I chose Southwest because I wanted to attend a college where the classes would be
smaller and I could get the student support I need,” Richardson siad. His mom, Doneisha
Odum, nodded in agreement. She has first-hand knowledge about Southwest as a 2010
alumnus with an associate degree in education. Odum later transferred to the University
of Memphis, where she earned two degrees.
Welcome, freshmen, to the Saluqi family!
