CCAMPIS child care program wins $900K federal grant
By Daphne Thomas
Congratulations to Child Care Centers Director Dr. Mary Palmer and her staff on receiving
a $900,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education (USDOL) for campus-based child
care services for low-income parents in post-secondary education. The grant will fund
the College’s Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) program for four
years.
Campus child care centers at the Macon Cove and Union Avenue campuses provide educational
programs for children 2 ½ to 5 years old. CCAMPIS allows eligible parents to receive
this care for their children at a discounted rate.
“We are thrilled to receive this funding which fulfills a critical need for our students
who need child care assistance to attend classes and pursue their credentials,” Dr.
Mary Palmer said. “Removing this barrier helps our students persist in finishing college
while providing a quality education for their children. It’s an investment in both
the future success of our students and their children.”
Both centers have openings for online or in-person learning. Southwest students and
employees, as well as the general public, are eligible to apply for CCAMPIS assistance.

Interested parents also may contact the centers at campuschildcare@southwest.tn.edu or call the Macon Cove Campus Center at 901-333-4522 or Union Avenue at 901-333-5233.
