Saluqis open 2021 Season
By Keith Gentry
After months without any outside competition due to COVID, Southwest’s basketball teams opened their 2021 season the week of January 25, 2021, while the baseball and softball teams began their season the following week.
“We are excited for our student-athletes, coaches and staff to get back into action starting January 27,” said Southwest’s athletic director Roger Ogden. “Although the last 10 months have been tough, I would like to thank everyone for working with the protocols we have put in place for the safe return to play. We encourage everyone to keep working hard as we move forward in the season!”
The Saluqis and Lady Saluqis opened their basketball season at the Verties Sails Gymnasium on the Union Avenue Campus Jan. 27 against Dyersburg State Community College. In the women's game, sophomore guard Taliyah Brown scored 18 points to lead five players who scored in double figures in a 79-77 loss. Other top scorers were sophomores Daisha Seltzer and Keyanna Logan with 12 points each and freshman Ariyani Robinson with 11 points and a team-leading 16 rebounds. In the men's game, the Saluqis jumped out to a 54-35 halftime lead and won the game 83-69 behind 29 points from sophomore guard Brandon Mason, who made eight three-point goals. Sophomore forward Jamey Sanders added 19 points and seven rebounds and Jeremiah Miller had 11 points.
Per Tennessee Community College Athletic Association (TCCAA) protocol, no fans were allowed in the gym.
Both games can be viewed on Southwest Tennessee Community College (team1sports.com).
The Southwest basketball teams will play (only) a conference schedule with a total of 16 games against schools in the ‘Western Division’ of the TCCAA. In addition to Dyersburg State, other opponents will include Columbia State Community College, Jackson State Community College and Volunteer State Community College.
On Saturday, Feb. 6, the Saluqis’ baseball team opened at USA Stadium, losing non-conference games to Dyersburg State 10-1 and Jackson State 6-2. The same day, the Lady Saluqis' softball team played Christian Brothers University in two exhibition games, losing 18-2 and 14-3. Both the baseball and softball teams open conference play at Jackson State on Feb. 17.
