Southwest celebrated its 25th Commencement on May 13, 2023, at the Renasant Convention Center in downtown Memphis where more than 1,200 credentials were conferred upon the Class of 2023. The graduates concluded their academic journeys as new alumni amid the cheers of family, friends and loved ones in attendance.

“To the class of 2023, I have three simple words— you made it,” said Southwest Tennessee Community College President Tracy D. Hall. “You made it this far through your perseverance and determination; through those efforts, we congratulate you on this significant milestone.”

Erika Konig was the Commencement’s student speaker. A first-generation student, adult learner and a Hispanic immigrant to the United States who never spoke English when she arrived, Konig graduated with an A.A. in communication. During her address, she encouraged her fellow graduates not to focus on age – that age is just a number that should never stop them from achieving their dreams or goals.

“Many of you who are graduating today are proof that age cannot stop you from furthering your education,” Konig said. “Getting over the age factor can be challenging because, as an older adult, there is more than just yourself to worry about. Sometimes in life you will have jobs, children, and spouses to think about. Today, however, is a day for all of us – adult learners and those who came in as traditional students. I can congratulate all of us on this remarkable achievement.”

Konig plans to enroll at the University of Memphis in fall 2023 to earn a bachelor’s in communication. She wants to become a journalist and begin her career working for a Spanish-speaking broadcasting network.

Leigh Mansberg, president of Junior Achievement of Memphis and the Mid-South, delivered the keynote address. “Every one of you embodies the potential for the future of our community and the potential you hold for your journey and your families,” Mansberg said. “What you have accomplished today is no small feat. It took courage and determination to reach this moment, and you never let anyone diminish what it took to get here today.”

The College’s traditional awarding of the William W. Farris Faculty of the Year Award was presented to Associate Professor of Business and Legal Studies Ashley Geisewite. Dr. Geisewite joined the Southwest family as an adjunct instructor in 1995 and was later promoted full-time in 1996. She has served the college in several faculty and administrative positions throughout her tenure, including her most recent role as associate dean of business and legal studies. As a dedicated faculty member, Dr. Geisewite designed online, hybrid and traditional courses, including SWIFT and fast-track formats. Her passion for serving adult learners is why she remains actively involved with Tennessee Reconnect initiatives. She is an active member of the Southwest community and participates in several committees including Academic Affairs, Student Services, Human Resources and Achieving the Dream. Dr. Geisewite received her award for her outstanding contributions to the college and for making a vital difference in the lives of countless students.

The Alumnus of the Year was presented to 2018 Associate of Science in general studies graduate Calvin Sanford. Sanford received the award for his dedication, leadership and commitment to furthering the goals of the college. Now a  successful entrepreneur and CEO of his marketing firm, Marketality, Sanford never forgot the support, resources and encouragement he found while at Southwest as a member of  Project M.O.S.T. Sanford continues to make a difference in the lives of Project M.O.S.T. students and is committed to their success while they are in college and beyond. Through his business connections and relationship building within the Memphis community and the Mid-South, Mr. Sanford has become a regional ambassador for Southwest and Project M.O.S.T.

Congratulations to the Class of 2023 and award winners!
